BERKELEY – The Golden Bears ran in 19 tries and yielded none Saturday on Witter Rugby Field as California defeated Arizona State in the Bears' first PAC Rugby Conference action of 2019.
 
Sophomore Marcus Shankland, freshman Sam Walsh and captain Nic Mirhashem each scored three tries for Cal (7-0,1-0 PAC), with two tries apiece added by Sid Holland, Elliot Webb and Sam Cusano. Webb finished 5-for-13 and Walsh ended 2-for-6 on conversions on cold, wet and windy affair against the Sun Devils (2-1, 1-1 PAC).
 
A one-sided scoring column did not discourage the visitors from continued effort through the final whistle. "I thought ASU really kept competing," said head coach Jack Clark. "There wasn't a disparity of heart."
 
As Cal eventually emptied its reserve bench, two unfortunate substitutions for injury were made for Zachary Tavenner, who came off early in the first half, and Sam Cusano, who exited in the second stanza.
 
"We want to keep making progress toward our improvement without neglecting the next match in front of us, and that next one is Cal Poly," said Mirhashem.
 
Cal hosts the Mustangs on Feb. 16 at Witter Rugby Field before welcoming British Columbia to town on Feb. 23.
 
"For us, we need to focus on our improvement," coach Clark said. "Obviously there are some excellent teams on the horizon."
