Bears Beat Aggies To Advance To Quarterfinals

Cal Hosts Two Matches April 20

BERKELEY — California had 11 players score a total of 21 tries vs. UC Davis Saturday on Witter Rugby Field in the national postseason Round of 16, allowing only a penalty kick to the Aggies as the Golden Bears advanced to the national quarterfinals.

The Bears (16-1) will host Arizona, which beat Central Washington in Tucson Saturday, 28-19, in one West Region national quarterfinal on April 20. The second quarterfinal April 20 on Witter Rugby Field will feature Brigham Young, 50-12 winners over UCLA Saturday in Provo, against Saint Mary's, which beat GCU at home, 74-12. Kickoff times are to be announced.

"We did some things well but we'll need to be better next week," said scrumhalf Ken Kurihara of Cal's effort against UC Davis. The junior called it "a big honor" to be selected as matchday captain for the Round of 16.

Freshman flyhalf Sam Walsh finished with 46 points on two tries and 18 conversions (18-for-21), while sophomore lock Sam Golla scored four tries for the Bears.

"We're just trying to bring everything together that we've been working on all year," said Golla. "Knowing I would have the chance to play at home today in blue and gold was something I treasured."

Aggies winger Tarik Siniora connected on a 20-meter penalty kick (1-for-1) in the 66th minute to put UC Davis on the board.

"We've still got a ways to go," commented prop Owen Duvall.

In other action in the Round of 16 Saturday, Arkansas State beat Army, 31-24, in West Point, N.Y., and Lindenwood shut out Wisconsin on the road, 97-0, to send the Lions against the Red Wolves on April 20 in Annapolis, Md. In Marietta, Ga., Life beat Penn State, 34-3, and Navy blanked Oklahoma on the road, 71-0, to set up the other East Region national quarterfinal between the Running Eagles and Midshipmen, also to be held April 20 at the United States Naval Academy.

Saint Mary's Stadium in Moraga is the site for the Western Final on April 27, while Lugo Stadium in Marietta, Ga., hosts the Eastern Final on same day.

The National Collegiate Championship final is May 4 in Stevens Stadium at Santa Clara University.
