Bears Wrap Up Weekend In Pacific Northwest

Huskies Keep Schoch Cup, Bears Sweep Oregon State

SEATTLE, Wash. --  The Cal men's rowing team wrapped up its weekend in the Pacific Northwest, splitting its two competitions against Washington and Oregon. Rowing fans were treated to an electric environment and spirited racing on Saturday morning as Cal and Washington met for their annual dual, renewing one of the best rivalries in college racing. The Huskies held the upper hand on the day, retaining the Schoch Cup as the varsity eight champions. The Bears responded on Sunday, winning all three of their races against Oregon State at Lake Vancouver.

"I'm proud of how the crews raced this weekend," said Cal head coach Scott Frandsen. "We've made a lot of progress over the past few weeks and now have a tangible result to build off over the next four weeks in the lead up to Pac-12s. The guys are resilient and excited to get back to work on Tuesday."

The marquee race on the schedule for Saturday's dual with Washington, the varsity eight was an exciting affair from start to finish as the Bears got off to a strong start. Cal lead by three seats after 500 meters and took a ¾ length lead at the midway mark. However, Washington used a strong push down the stretch to draw level with the Bears entering the Cut and pulled ahead in the final 300 meters.

Washington also took the second varsity eight in another closely contested race. The Huskies pulled ahead by a few seats after the first 500 meters and were able to slowly add to their advantage over the middle of the race. Cal kept Washington within striking distance and was able to make up ground over the last 1,000-meter but could not complete the comeback.

The freshman eight and third varsity eight races both saw the Huskies get out to an early start, leading nearly bow to stern by the 500-meter mark. The Golden Bears showed resolve and did not allow Washington to add to its advantage but were unable to make up ground on its rivals.

The Bears wrapped up the weekend on Sunday, winning all their races against Oregon State. Cal's freshman and third varsity eights finished first and second, respectively, while racing against the Beavers' third varsity. The Bears' varsity eight and second varsity eight also won their heats with strong racing against their Pac-12 opponents.

Cal will be back in action next weekend, taking on Stanford at 9 a.m. PT on Saturday at Redwood Shores.
