BERKELEY –
Jared Horn's start days have become unofficial holidays for the Cal bullpen.
Relievers just haven't been pressed into duty much when the Bears right-hander takes the hill. Coming off a Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week honor, Horn continued an outstanding run with eight stellar innings as the Bears dispatched Oregon 10-5 on Saturday at Evans Diamond.
The junior held the Ducks to five hits, and just two of his four runs were earned. He struck out eight and walked one, winning his fourth start in a row to improve to 4-1 over eight outings this season.
Jack Hinrichsen and
Jack Delmore (who notched his first save with Cal) combined on the ninth, but mostly Cal's relievers have gotten to just sit back and watch Horn mix his fastball and offspeed stuff with great success to keep hitters off balance.
"It's always good to save the bullpen a little bit for Sunday," Horn said. "And we've got a game on Monday."
The Bears (23-14, 10-7 Pac-12) have already clinched this three-game series against the Ducks (22-18, 7-10) – their third Pac-12 series win in their past four -- and they'll go for a sweep Sunday at 1:05 p.m.
They took command by opening an 8-0 lead after three innings.
Cameron Eden,
Darren Baker,
Grant Holman and
Garret Nielsen all drove in two runs in the game, with Holman going 3-for-4.
It's a tall task for opponents to chip away at that deficit, particularly with Horn on the mound. He's now pitched at least eight innings in four consecutive starts, particularly important in this weekend wrap-around when the Bears play four games in four days. Cal hosts BYU in a non-conference game Monday afternoon.
Horn's ERA is a sparkling 1.71, and he's allowed just 31 hits in 47 1/3 innings. Yet he's more enthused talking about his team as a whole.
"I think we're having fun, playing good baseball," he said. "I think we found out we don't have to be in awe of anyone. We just come out and play good baseball."
