2018-19 Team Awards Announced At Annual Banquet
Collin Morikawa Named Cal’s Most Outstanding Player For Third Consecutive Season
ORINDA, Calif. – Collin Morikawa was named Cal's Most Valuable Player for the third consecutive season at the team's annual awards banquet Friday evening at Orinda Country Club. Morikawa also shared the team's prestigious Ed Arnold Coaches Award with fellow seniors
Sebastian Crampton,
Ben Doyle and
KK Limbhasut. Other honors went to
Connor Golembeski (Most Improved Player),
Kaiwen Liu (Ben Furth Award) and
James Song (Newcomer of the Year).
"This was a tremendous evening for everyone in our program," Alex and Marie Shipman Director of Men's Golf
Walter Chun said. "I'm proud of our team and what they have done both individually and collectively this season and throughout their Cal careers. It was great to honor so many of our deserving student-athletes tonight and share that with so many people that are so important to our program."
"It's very special to have four seniors at this banquet," Morikawa said. "I wouldn't want anyone else by my side as we graduate and move on. We've worked so hard the past four and five years, and everything we've learned at Cal has definitely prepared us for our futures. Being named this year's team MVP is such an honor. There are so many great players on this squad and it's very rewarding to know that I'm one of the leaders of this team. It is my responsibility to keep pushing everyone to their highest capability especially as the postseason comes up."
Cal finished third in its most recent event at the Pac-12 Championships that concluded Wednesday and the Golden Bears will learn where they will play May 13-15 in NCAA Regional action when the announcement is made live May 1 on GOLF Channel's Golf Central. The top five teams from each of six NCAA Regionals will advance to play in the 30-team field May 24-29 at the NCAA Championships hosted by Arkansas.
