Cal Prepares For Big Row Against Stanford
Bears And Cardinal To Honor Jill Costello's Legacy At Dual
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. - The Cal women's rowing team will finish out the regular season on Saturday, taking on Stanford in the latest installment of the Big Row at Redwood Shores. A rivalry rich in tradition, this year's Big Row features two of the fastest crews in the nation and also serves as a great opportunity for both teams to test their lineups and speed heading into the championship season later this month.
Saturday's dual also gives both teams the opportunity to honor the legacy of the late Jill Costello, a coxswain for the Bears who passed away from lung cancer in 2010 at the age of 22.
"Both Stanford and Cal race as 'Team Jill' to honor the legacy that Jill left as a coxswain at Cal and to honor all those affected by cancer," said Cal head coach Al Acosta. "We will wear seafoam green tanks as that was Jill's favorite color. Many of Jill's teammates have shared with our current team their experience of being on the team with Jill during her senior year,  how she changed their lives, and how she inspires them today. Their stories always have central themes of toughness, humor, passion, and commitment to team, faith, and family. We will do our best to honor Jill by being present for each other, lifting each other up, and racing as hard we possibly can."
The day's events will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the Frosh/Novice eight race and conclude at 10:00 a.m. with the marquee race of the day, the women's varsity eight. The third varsity eight, second varsity four, varsity four, and second varsity eight will also be in action.
After the competition on Saturday, the Bears will have a week off to prepare for the Pac-12 Championship in Gold River on Saturday, May 19. Cal, Stanford, and Washington, who round out the top three teams in the nation, will all be in action and racing for the conference title. Cal took second place at last year's Pac-12 Championship and has finished as first or second every year for the past four seasons.
