Kikuchi, Brumm Win NCAA Doubles Opener
ORLANDO, Fla. – After a long wait to play their Tuesday opener of the NCAA Doubles Championship, Cal's 28th-ranked
Yuta Kikuchi and
Jacob Brumm won in straight sets over Bryant's Wilson Dong and Matt Kuhar in the last match of the night to advance to the second round.
Â
The Golden Bears defeated the 76th-ranked Bulldogs, 6-4, 7-5, and will next play a familiar opponent – and another team of Bulldogs – in Mississippi State's third-seeded and third-ranked Nuno Borges and Strahinja Rakic in the round of 16. Last fall, the newly formed Cal partnership upset the then-top-ranked Rakic and Borges in the ITA All-American Championships round of 32.
Â
The Bears-Bulldogs rematch will start not before 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday at the USTA National Campus.
