Woodbury, Green Join Women’s Gymnastics Roster
Golden Bears Add California Duo To Incoming Recruiting Class
BERKELEY – California women's gymnastics newest roster is complete with the additions of California standouts Ashton Woodbury and Maya Green.
Green, out of Airborne Gymnastics, continues a Golden Bear gymnastics dynasty, following in the footsteps of her parents Scott Green and Kristen Smyth. Scott competed with Cal's men's gymnastics team from 1987-92 and coached from 1992-96, while Kristen competed on the women's gymnastics team before becoming the head coach for Stanford women's gymnastics from 2001-17 and is inducted in the Cal Athletics Hall of Fame.
The San Jose, Calif., product qualified to Junior Olympic Nationals in 2016 and 2018, where she was the national uneven bars runner-up in both years. This season, she turned in a third-place finish on bars at the regional championships and was 12
th all-around at the WOGA Classic/Nastia Liukin Invitation, with top three finishes on bars (2
nd) and vault (3
rd).
"Maya brings a great deal of artistry to every performance. She loves to dance, and is one of the most outstanding dancers on floor exercise at the Junior Olympic level. I am so excited to see her be able to explore her love for choreography in her routines. She will also bring beautiful lines on the uneven bars and has great flight and dynamic technique on that event," said co-head coach Liz Crandall-Howell. "Maya has an exuberant personality that is infectious. This spark will bring great value to our team, and I am excited to watch her develop as a great leader."
The Bears add another JO National qualifier in Woodbury, who qualified in 2018 after claiming seventh all-around and second on vault at Level 10 regionals. In 2017, she placed sixth all-around at Level 10 SoCal States, with top 10 finishes on vault (2
nd), floor (6
th) and bars (7
th). Woodbury, from Laguna Niguel, Calif., joins the Bears from Wildfire Gymnastics.
"Ashton has a passion for life and an entrepreneurial spirit that is infectious. She chose Cal for the right reasons -- because she wants to challenge herself in every aspect of her life," said co-head coach
Justin Howell. "On the competition floor, Ashton is quick and dynamic. She has a high degree of difficulty and she will add another 10.0 start value to our deep vault lineup."
The duo joins fellow Golden State products Nevaeh DeSouza (Fairfield, Calif.) and Natalie Sadighi (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) in Cal's four-member incoming class.
