Katherine Zhu Is Tied For 20th After First Round
OPELIKA, Alabama – After a rough start to the day, Cal bounced back over the final three holes to move up seven spots and put themselves back within striking distance of a NCAA Tournament berth. Cal closed strongly at Saugahatchee Country Club as they combined to shoot two under over the final three holes to move from 18th into a tie for 11th at the NCAA Auburn Regional.
The Bears' trend of starting slowly continued on Monday morning as all five players were at least two-over across the first six holes of the tournament. It was an early wakeup time for the Bears as they travelled east for a 6:50 a.m. PT start. However, the slow start put Cal in an early deficit as they dropped all the way to 18th place.
The team responded over the second half of the day as they got some birdies to drop at the end of the round to move up the leaderboard. They finished the day with a 16-over 304 score, they are ten spots behind both Tennessee and Maryland who are tied for the fifth and sixth spots in the standings, the two teams currently in-line to receive the final NCAA Championship berths.
As she has done so many times throughout the year, freshman Katherine Zhu led the way for the Bears. She shot a two-over 74, including an even par on the second nine to finish the first day in a tie for 20th place. Zhu closed her front nine with a birdie, which helped set the tone for a smooth second nine which saw her record only one bogey and one birdie.
Junior Maria Herraez Galvez is tied for 34th place after 18 holes as she shot a three-over 75. She had the best start of any Cal student-athlete as the Madrid native played even par over the first five holes before a double bogey on 15 sent her to two-over. She recorded a birdie on the sixth hole, only Cal's second of the day, sparking a run of four birdies over the next three holes.
Elena Arias joined her fellow Spaniard in a tie for 34th place as she closed with two birdies over her final three holes to finish three-over 75. Arias was five-over after 15 holes, but birdied the par-3 seventh hole and the par-5 eighth hole to record an even 36 over the back nine.
Cindy Oh also recorded a birdie on the seventh hole, but that was the only one of the day for the Cal senior. Oh finished with an eight-over 80 score and she is tied for 82nd. Marianne Li is in 95th place after 18 holes as she shot a 12-over 84.
Cal will be back in action tomorrow morning as they will tee off at 8 a.m. CT/6 a.m. PT at Saugahatchee Country Club. Cal will be partnered with Alabama and Denver as they look to continue their climb up the leaderboard.
