Bears Add Del Castillo As Assistant Men’s Gymnastics Coach

Bryan Del Castillo Was Named An Assistant Coach For Men's Gymnastics

BERKELEY – Bryan Del Castillo, a 2011 All-American for the California men's gymnastics team, was named an assistant coach for the Golden Bears as announced on Thursday by head coach JT Okada.

"I'm extremely excited to have Bryan back at Cal," Okada said. "He was a tremendous student-athlete, and now an insightful coach. I am confident he will be a tremendous addition to the program."

Del Castillo garnered All-America honors on parallel bars with a fifth-place finish in the event at the 2011 NCAA Championships as a senior. He boasts years of international experience, as well as years of coaching at different levels under his belt.

"I'm really excited to work with JT and the team," Del Castillo said. "There's much potential on this team, and I look forward to sharing my gymnastics experience and knowledge with them."

Del Castillo is a former U.S. National team member and a Pan American gold medalist. He also spent 2013 as a Senior National Team coach for USA Gymnastics. In addition to his work with USA Gymnastics, Del Castillo served as the head coach for The Philippines at the Tokyo World Championships.

"I've competed and coached at every level that gymnastics has to offer," Del Castillo said. "I've had success as an athlete and as a coach. I'm definitely ready to help this team grow."

At the end of his collegiate career, Del Castillo remained a fixture of the Bears' program as a graduate assistant coach from 2011-13, helping the 2012 Cal squad earn a fourth-place finish at NCAAs.

From 2014-19, Del Castillo served as the head coach/boys program director at New Hope Academy of Gymnastics. Responsible for all of the daily operations for the boys program, he grew the team and produced national qualifiers.

Most recently, Del Castillo was the head coach for South Coast Gymnastics in Irvine, Calif., in 2019.

Del Castillo graduated from Cal in 2011 with a degree in economics.

"My experience at Cal was definitely a determining factor in wanting to come back here as a coach," he said. "I formed lasting bonds with my teammates and had moments I will never forget. I even got married on campus in 2017. I hope that the student-athletes I coach have a similar experience to mine and really embrace the opportunities they have at Cal."
