Five Gymnasts Earn Scholastic All-America Laurels

Cal’s Quintet Of Honorees Marks The Second-Most Scholastic All-Americans For The Bears In Program History

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – California women's gymnastics' five scholastic honorees mark the second-most in school history, as the Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) revealed Monday.

Rachael Mastrangelo, Nina Schank, Sylvie Seilnacht, Chelsea Shu and Emily Howe all earned WCGA Scholastic All-America status.

Graduated senior Shu and rising junior Schank led the Bear quintet with their second Scholastic All-America nods, with Shu earning the title in 2017 and Schank collecting her second consecutive award. Both were named Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention selections in March, along with fellow Scholastic All-American Seilnacht. This is the first honor for Howe, Mastrangelo and Seilnacht.

Gymnasts must attain a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher to be recognized as WCGA Scholastic All-Americans. Cal's five selections this year matches the second-highest total in program history (2013, 2007, 2005, 1996), while the 1995 squad boasted seven Scholastic All-Americans.

Under the direction of co-head coaches Liz Crandall-Howell and Justin Howell, the Bears have captured 25 WCGA awards throughout the last seven seasons. Cal finished with a team GPA of 3.23 in the 2018-19 academic year, up from 3.21 in 2018.
