California Head Coach Mark Fox

Overall Thoughts:
"Really an outstanding win today against a hard-nosed, well-coached Utah team. I thought today was going to be a good day -- I knew we'd get off to a great start when our four seniors showed up wearing a coat and tie to the game in honor of their experience at Cal. I think that speaks volume when kids do that unannounced. Those kids have really changed the momentum of our program, and I'm thankful for them. I'm pleased they could get a win on senior day, but on senior day it took everyone to get it done. We're thankful for the win."
Â
On Keeping Emotions Calm and In Check Down the Stretch:
"It comes down to the environment you put them in every day. You can't coast on the emotions and concentration during the game -- you have to be prepared for that beforehand. Joel had to leave the game to get some stitches, and we had some foul trouble. We had a lot of guys contribute. The mentality that's needed for moments like this is something you have to establish well before tipoff."
Â
On Paris Austin and Seniors:
"With the way he's bought in to what we've taught him,
Paris Austin deserves to have success. Now, it doesn't mean that it was easy for him. He didn't start when the year began, but he's grown and developed. I didn't recruit most of these seniors -- I inherited them. My obligation is to treat them like my own, and they've just been unbelievable. Paris has had a season that I believe has changed the momentum of Cal basketball. And, for the rest of his life, he should get credit for that. I'm extremely grateful I've had the opportunity to coach him."
Â
On Dominating Offensive Rebounds:
"Unfortunately, they had an injury early, so they had a short rotation. We had a lot of guys on our end ready to play. Today, we felt it would it be important for us to play with a relentless determination. I thought that determination showed on the glass."
Â
On Joel Brown's Comeback Effort:
"He had blood everywhere. He shows it to me like 'What am I supposed to do about it?' I don't how many stitches he had, but to come back after that, and get on the floor for loose balls, make plays, and impact the game, that shows the great competitive effort Joel has. I know we were very grateful for that effort today."
Â
On Direction of the Basketball Program:
"During the offseason and parts of the preseason, I got sick of everyone telling us how bad we were going to be, because I didn't think we would be. I just wasn't going to accept that, and I wasn't going to let our team accept that either. It was a constant message. As I've told them, the change in this program had to come from inside. The belief had to start from the inside, and the trust had to start from the inside. Fortunately for me, I have great young people who bought into what we're doing. Coach
Wyking Jones texted me last night -- he's been supportive of these kids. They came here to have a good experience, and hopefully they feel like this year they've made progress. We're not anywhere near nor close to where we want to be. But, I think the perception and feelings about our team, and this program are drastically different from what I heard all summer."
Â
On Cal Fans:
"The fans today had a huge impact on the game. I think our fans are tremendous. We have to establish that we're going to be really tough at home, that we're going to play well, and that not only are our fans going to come, but they're going to roll up their sleeves and fight with us. And today, they did that. They did that a lot this year, and hopefully we can continue to build off the numbers going into next season.

On Back to Back Wins at Home and Getting the Win on Senior Day:
"It means a lot to us. We wanted to win this one for our seniors, and build some momentum going into the next series. We've played well at home all season– tonight we wanted to keep that going."
Â
On Building Momentum for Next Season
"Honestly, we were trying to change the standard around here. We wanted to let competing every day and working hard be the Cal way. I think over the last few years, as a group, we've worked hard to build that up so Cal becomes a force to be reckoned with."
Â
On Games Coming Up and Preparing for Pac-12 Tournament.
"It definitely helps getting some wins before the tournament. Our team is playing with a lot more confidence. We have to continue that momentum heading into the tournament, and see how we do from there."

Â
On Back to Back Wins at Home and Getting the Win on Senior Day:
"I think it shows our improvement. I'm really happy we got the win for our seniors today. They deserved all that."
Â
On Paris Austin's Senior Send–off:
"Paris has been huge for us, especially during the late stages of the game. He's been so good for us– attacking the rim, getting to the foul line, making his free throws, getting defensive stops. He's been so good for us. We wouldn't have won that game without him."
Â
On Believing In the Team Despite Critics:
"We've believed in this team since the start. We always had faith in ourselves. With the guys around, us and coaching staff we have, we always knew we were going to be better than what people had said. We kept working, we kept focusing on the process, and doing whatever it took to get to this stage. You can see we are getting better and better every game. I believe we are in a good place right now."
Â
"We say it's hard not to see, but we don't let it impact how we approach everything. It's out of our control. We focus on ourselves and getting better both individually and as a team. We always knew if we stuck to that, the results would show for themselves. I feel like it's starting to do that and happen right now."
