TEMPE, Ariz. - The California men's gymnastics team set a school record on parallel bars and a season-best on rings for the fifth consecutive time this season, and the Golden Bears finished third at the Southwest Cup hosted by Arizona State on Saturday in Tempe, Ariz.

Cal posted a final score of 396.400. Stanford won the meet (420.700) and Ohio State took second (408.150). The Bears defeated the ASU Gold and Maroon squads.

"It wasn't our best meet, but we continue to fight and went six-for-six on pommel horse, so I'm happy with that," head coach JT Okada said. "The next steps are to get some recovery over the next week or so, and upgrade and refine routines for the five-for-five portion of our schedule going forward."

Cal posted a score of 69.000 on parallel bars, surpassing the previous school record of 68.550 from 2018. In the event, Darren Wong paced his team with a career-high and school-record mark of 14.600. Wong also owned the previous school record mark of 14.450. Yu-Chen Lee's 14.000 is the third-best mark in school history.

For the fifth time in as many meets in 2020, the Bears have improved their team score on rings (67.150). Kyte Crigger led the way in that rotation with a 13.900.

Jonathan Wong once again competed in the all-around, finishing with a total of 79.500, just shy of his season best. His best score of the day was a 13.900 on parallel bars.

Kyle Shuttle paced Cal on vault with a mark of 14.400, half a point shy of his season high.

Cal has the next couple weeks off. Cal returns to Burnham Pavilion on the Stanford campus for the Stanford International Collegiate Open on Saturday, Feb. 29, at 4 p.m. The following week will be Cal's final home meet of the season when the Bears host Navy for Senior Day on Saturday, March 7, at 4 p.m. from Haas Pavilion.
