Cal Said Farewell To Its Five Seniors On Saturday

BERKELEY - The California men's gymnastics team turned in its season-best performance against Navy on Saturday posting a score of 403.100 on Senior Day from Haas Pavilion. It was the Golden Bears' second time hitting 400 points after notching a 400.700 at the Stanford Open earlier this season.

The Bears are now guaranteed at least one 400-point score in qualifying for the NCAA Championships. The team score at the MPSF Championships replaces the top team score in the regular season.

Although Navy won the meet, 410.500 – 403.100, head coach JT Okada was proud of the way his team sent off its seniors.

"It was an emotionally-charged meet," Okada said. "This team continued to fight and pushed their limit until the end. We made a couple mistakes, but we kept fighting, and it showed."

Kyle Shuttle pushed the Bears out in front on floor, posting a season-high mark of 14.400. Kyte Crigger followed with a season high of his own with a 14.150.

"It's a long season", Okada said. "There's ups and downs of course, but you have to stay with the process. They've been working extremely hard in and out of the gym all season, and their preparation showed in today's meet."

A strong ring rotation saw the Bears post a 67.250 mark, which surpassed their best performance this season. Darren Wong turned in a strong performance with a 13.850 mark, and Crigger followed with his season-best in the event at 13.200. Anton Vorona also turned in his best performance of the season in the event with a 13.750.

Cal's best performance on the afternoon came in their final rotation on high bar. In their final event, the Bears went 5-for-5 on the floor, combining for a 67.700 mark to close out the meet. The lineup of Jonathan Wang, Harrison Plate, Kyle Abe, Darren Wong and Crigger all turned in season-high performances.

"I couldn't be prouder of them", Okada said. "This is a brutal sport. With the level of difficulty and what we ask out of these guys, it makes for a long season. For these guys to preserve and continue to work extremely hard in this sport, it means a lot to myself and this coaching staff. I'm looking forward to welcoming this group back as alumni, and coming back to the program telling us about their lives and future careers. I'm proud of them."

The Bears continue their 2020 campaign next Saturday, March 14, at 4 p.m. as they take on Bay Area rival Stanford at Maples Pavilion. The meet airs live on Pac-12 Networks.
