Gymnasts Claim School-Record 8 All-Conference Honors
Five Golden Bear Gymnasts Combine For Eight All-Pac-12 Selections, Including Six First Team
SAN FRANCISCO – With another record-breaking season in the books, California gymnasts combined to earn a school-record eight All-Pac-12 honors, the conference office announced today.
Â
Kyana George led the Golden Bears with three all-conference selections, including first team honors as an all-arounder and on vault, plus an honorable mention selection on balance beam. She shared first team all-around laurels with
Maya Bordas and
Nevaeh DeSouza. Bordas also earned first team honors on the uneven bars.
Milan Clausi is a first team vault selection, and
Emi Watterson rounded out the group with an honorable mention award on the uneven bars.
Â
DeSouza was also named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year – the second consecutive Cal gymnast to win the award, and fourth in the last eight seasons.
Â
Pac-12 All-Conference Teams were determined using National Qualifying Scores. Because the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, teams were determined based on scores through March 9. The first team consists of the top finishers in each individual event and in the all-around, including ties, while honorable mention selections consist of the seventh and eighth place finishers, including ties.
Â
George, who earlier this week was named a Women's Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA) Second Team All-American in the all-around, ranked in the top 10 nationally and second in the Pac-12 as an all-arounder. She ranked within the Top 15 in the league on every event, including third on vault. She was thrice named the Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week and claimed a team-best 17 event titles with 27 top-three finishes. She won the all-around title in five of her eight meets as an all-arounder while displaying her versatility with five vault titles, three beam crowns and four floor wins this season.
Â
Bordas, who also joined George as a Second Team All-American in both the all-around and on bars, adds first team all-around and bars honors to her trophy case. She ranked fourth in the Pac-12 and 15
th nationally in the all-around with a 39.395 NQS, as well as fourth in the conference and 11
th nationally on bars. Bordas claimed eight event titles this season, including four uneven bars crowns with season-best scores of 9.925. She won the Pac-12 Coaches' Choice Award on Feb. 13 after posting a career-high 39.475 against Utah and setting a new career-high on floor with a 9.90.
Â
DeSouza led the conference's freshmen in the all-around and ranked third among all freshmen nationally while claiming a league-best three Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors and posting the highest all-around score of any newcomer with a 39.475. She was second among her teammates with 18 top three finishes in 2020, which included three event titles. DeSouza hit every single one of her 40 events this year, competing as an all-arounder in all 10 of Cal's meets.
Â
Clausi added a second All-Pac-12 selection on vault, this time as a first team honoree after earning a second team selection last year in her freshman campaign. She was sixth in the Pac-12 with an NQS of 9.885 and matched her career-best 9.95 on the event twice this season while going a perfect 10-for-10. She won vault at the NorCal Classic.
Â
Like Clausi,
Watterson collected her second consecutive all-conference nod, earning a spot on the uneven bars honorable mention squad after taking a second team spot last season. Watterson won bars four times, including with a career-best 9.975 -- the first in school history, and second only to Cindy Tom's 10.0 on bars set in 1992. Watterson ranked eighth in the Pac-12 on the event with a 9.890 NQS.
