Bears’ Bats Silenced

Cal Falls At Home To Tenth-Ranked Michigan

BERKELEY – California was unable to overcome an early deficit and fell to No. 10 (Baseball America) Michigan, 5-0, at Evans Diamond on Wednesday night.

Darren Baker (3-for-4) tallied three of Cal's seven hits in another quiet offensive night for the Bears, who dropped to 3-9. The visiting Wolverines (7-5) seized control of the contest with a 3-0 advantage in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Lucas Gather took the loss on the mound and was one of eight Cal pitchers to see action on Wednesday.

Cal's slow start saw Gather walk two of Michigan's first four batters while defensive miscommunication in the outfield allowed a routine fly ball to drop and load the bases. The Wolverines capitalized on the mistakes, plating one run on a bases-loaded infield single to the right side and added two more on a double down the line.

The Bears' pitching staff dug in from then on, allowing just two runs the rest of the way on a solo home run in the fifth and RBI single in the seventh, but Cal's offense was unable to right the ship. Grant Holman added a 2-for-4 night at the plate.
