Bears Battle Bruins In Top 10 Showdown

No. 9 Bears Meet No. 3 Bruins With Another Chance To Up Their NQS
California women's gymnastics is set for a pivotal Top 10 showdown this weekend when the No. 9 Golden Bears head to Los Angeles to face No. 3 UCLA. The Bears and Bruins meet Sunday at 1 p.m. from Pauley Pavilion and airing live on the Pac-12 Networks.
The Bears face the Bruins for the second time this season after meeting in the season-opening Collegiate Challenge powered by Under Armour in Anaheim. There, UCLA edged Cal 196.575-196.200, but the Bears outscored the Bruins on beam. Cal has another chance at improving its National Qualifying Score this weekend by dropping a 196.250 from the Arizona State meet on Feb. 1.
Cal is coming off its fourth consecutive win after topping No. 24 Arizona, 196.400-196.275, at home in Haas Pavilion. The Bears' depth was tested due to injuries, and Nina Schank and Grace Quinn both made their all-around debuts, with Schank posting a 39.475 all-around to claim the win. Freshman phenom Nevaeh DeSouza was the all-around runner-up, and for the second week in a row Cal went 39.475 on vault for the second-highest score in school history.

2015 -- After numerous injuries and surgeries throughout her club career, Grace Quinn competed in the all-around for the first time since 2015. Quinn debuted on bars against Arizona, and earned a 39.025 for all four of her events.
49.475 -- For the second consecutive week, California tallied a 49.475 on vault, which matches the second-highest team total on the event in school history. It is also the fourth-best vault score of any program in the country this year.
•Nina Schank and Grace Quinn made their all-around debuts, with Schank winning the all-around with a 39.475.
• Schank also won floor with a career-high 9.90, sharing the event title with Milan Clausi.
• Maya Bordas posted a season-best 9.925 to win bars.
• Rachael Mastrangelo and Clausi each earned 9.95s on vault to help Cal to a 39.475 on the event -- the second-highest vault team total in school history.
• Nevaeh DeSouza was the all-around runner-up and tallied a 9.90 on vault.
NQS determines seeding at conference championships and in NCAA postseason meets. In the Pac-12 Conference, the top four-seeded teams compete in the evening session of the Pac-12 Gymnastics Championships, while the lower four teams compete in the afternoon session.

WHAT'S AN NQS, AND WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Beginning on Feb. 24 this season, women's gymnastics programs around the country earn their rankings based on their National Qualifying Score, or NQS. The NQS is determined using a team's top six scores of the season, three of which must be from an away meet. Of the six, the highest score is dropped and the remaining five are averaged.NQS determines seeding at conference championships and in NCAA postseason meets.
