Extra-Inning Defeat

Cal Falters Late Against San Francisco In Series Finale

BERKELEY – California surrendered eight unanswered runs over the final three innings of Sunday's series finale and fell to San Francisco, 8-3, in 10 innings at Evans Diamond.

The Bears (4-11) held a 3-0 advantage heading into the eighth inning after Sean Sullivan and Josh White combined for 6.2 innings of scoreless work on the mound. San Francisco (8-8) rallied with one run in the eighth and two in the ninth before taking a lead with a five-spot in the 10th. The Dons won the weekend series, earning both of their victories in Berkeley.

A three-run home run by Darius Foster in the top of the 10th broke a 3-3 tie and opened the door for two more runs by the Dons. All five runs were credited to Steven Zobac, who fell to 1-2 on the mound. In the ninth with Cal leading 3-1, San Francisco put two runners on with no outs against Nick Proctor, leading to an RBI single through the right side. A wild pitch by Ian Villers later in the inning allowed the game-tying run to cross.

Cal was in complete charge through the first seven innings on Sunday. Sullivan allowed one hit and struck out three Dons over the first 3.2 innings. Once Sullivan reached his designated pitch count, he turned it over to White, who tallied another three strikeouts and worked around two hits before he was pulled in the seventh.

The Bears struck first in the fifth with a RBI single by Ethan Cloyd, which scored Zobac from second base. They plated two more runs the following inning with a sacrifice fly from Grant Holman and an RBI double by Zobac.
