Haley Giavara Named ITA All-American
BERKELEY – California women's tennis star
Haley Giavara earned singles All-American status to cap her freshman year, the ITA announced Tuesday.
Â
"We're very pleased to have one of our players selected as an ITA All-American," Cal head coach
Amanda Augustus said. "That's part of our program's history and tradition. Haley had a fantastic first season that obviously was shortened a bit. She was able to make the most of her opportunities in the fall and the spring in singles and doubles. She's a great representative of our program, and we look forward to seeing what she's able to do in her next few years on the team."
Â
Given the abbreviated season, the ITA awarded All-America honors based on the unpublished, double run of the Oracle ITA Singles and Doubles Rankings. Twenty singles players and 10 doubles teams received All-America accolades.
Â
A product of San Diego, Giavara posted a team-best record of 19-7 in singles – along with a 13-7 doubles record – in 2019-20. One of her best results came in Cal's March 6 match vs. UCLA in Berkeley, with the 15th-ranked Giavara topping the Bruins' ninth-ranked Elysia Bolton, 6-4, 7-6(5), on court one at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Â
The young Bear had a total of seven wins over singles opponents ranked at the end of the season, including North Carolina's third-ranked Alexa Graham, Duke's seventh-ranked Kelly Chen and Stanford's 12th-ranked Michaela Gordon. Giavara upset the top-seeded Chen, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, in the inaugural Women's Collegiate Classic in the fall.
Â
Additionally, Giavara made a big impact in doubles starting in the fall, when she teamed with
Anna Bright to reach the semifinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships and the semifinals of the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. The duo captured the top-flight doubles title in the Cal Winter Invitational in January and later ended the year with a No. 31 ranking and a 9-4 record.
Â
On March 7 in Berkeley, in Cal's last match of the season, Giavara teamed with fellow freshman
Valentina Ivanov to knock off USC's 16th-ranked Eryn Cayetano and Angela Kulikov, 6-2, in the Bears' 6-1 win over the Trojans. Giavara and Ivanov compiled a 3-2 record, while Giavara and
Julia Rosenqvist were 1-1 in doubles.
