Three Bears Included On Pair Of MLB Opening Day Rosters

BERKELEY – With the 2020 Major League Baseball season beginning Thursday night, three former Cal standouts were named to a pair of Opening Day rosters.

Mark Canha (Oakland), Marcus Semien (Oakland) and Andrew Knapp (Philadelphia) were all expectedly included on their respective teams' 30-man rosters. Cal alumnus Bob Melvin enters his 10th year as the Athletics' manager while Bryan Price ('84 alumnus) is in his first year as the Phillies' pitching coach.

Knapp and the Phillies will open the season at home against Miami at 4:05 p.m. (PT) Friday. Canha, Semien, Melvin and the Athletics face the Los Angeles Angels at 7:10 p.m. (PT) Friday in Oakland. The 2020 MLB season was delayed for months due to the COVID-19 pandemic and has been shortened to 60 games.

Three other Golden Bears – Daulton Jefferies (Oakland), Aaron Shortridge (Pittsburgh) and Andrew Vaughn (Chicago White Sox) – have been assigned to their respective clubs' alternate training sites and are eligible to play in the MLB this season.
