Bears Open Minnesota Invite
Cal Finishes Fourth In 200 Medley Relay, Fifth In 800 Free Relay
MINNEAPOLIS – California men's swimming & diving opened the Minnesota Invite with a pair of relay finals at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatics Center on Wednesday night. Â
The Bears started the four-day competition with the 200 medley relay finals and placed all three teams inside the top 10, led by
Daniel Carr,
Liam Bell,
Robin Hanson and
Björn Seeliger, who finished fourth overall with a time of 1:24.28. Seeliger's 18.57 split on the anchor leg was the fastest time of any of the freestyle swimmers.
California's time was fast enough to secure the NCAA B qualifying standard.
Texas swept the top two spots in the race, clocking times of 1:23.33 and 1:23.35, while Michigan took third-place in 1:23.47. Cal's B quartet of
Destin Lasco,
Reece Whitley,
Matthew Jensen and
Jack Alexy finished sixth overall, posting a time of 1:24.59.
Closing the night with the 800 free relay, Cal's team of
Gabriel Jett, Seeliger, Hanson and Lasco took fifth place with a time of 6:19.05, another NCAA B qualifying time. It was the first time Cal raced the 800 free relay this season. Texas won the race by clocking 6:10.14.
The Bears' B team of
Colby Mefford, Alexy,
Dare Rose and
Dylan Hawk finished in seventh, posting 6:24.31.
UP NEXT
Cal returns to the pool Thursday in Minnesota for prelims and finals of the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle and 400 medley relay (finals only). Prelims begin at 8 a.m. PT and finals start at 4 p.m. PT.
