Friday Shutout

Cal Blanks Utah, 9-0, In Pac-12-Opening Win

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Keshawn Ogans drove in four runs and four Golden Bears tossed a combined shutout as California opened Pac-12 Conference play with a 9-0 victory over Utah Friday night at Smith's Ballpark.

The Bears dominated all facets of the series opener, improving to 13-7 overall and 1-0 in Pac-12 action with their sixth win in seven games. Staff ace Grant Holman made his season debut on the mound and looked sharp, striking out four Utes across three scoreless frames while working on a pitch count.

Nick Proctor (2-1) picked up the win as he mowed down the Utah (4-12, 1-3) lineup throughout the meat of the game. The right-hander scattered two hits and a walk throughout his four scoreless innings pitched before turning it over to Jack Wolger and Ian Villers for the eighth and ninth frames. Cal's four pitchers allowed just four total hits to Utah while striking out 10.

A three-run second inning was jump-started by Nathan Martorella's two-run home run to right field. Ogans added the third run of the inning when he singled home Nathan Manning. After plating one run in both the third and fourth frames to make it a 5-0 advantage, Cal put the game away with a four-run sixth inning.

John Lagattuta launched his first home run of the year to straight-away center field before an Ogans triple plated two more runs. Quentin Selma added the final run of the game with a single that scored Ogans.
