SAN FRANCISCO – California rugby closed out day one of the West Coast Collegiate 7s Tournament at Treasure Island with an undefeated record, its two sides going 6-0 combined.
Â
Cal entered two squads into the tournament named Cal I and Cal II, the latter of the two being a developmental side of the program. Cal I played in Pool A while Cal II was slated in Pool C.
Â
Cal I had a dominant first day, not conceding a single point in any of its three matches. The team opened the tournament with a match against a UC Davis side.
Caleb Tomasin touched down in the tryzone just 20 seconds into the match to kick off the scoring. The Bears handed the Aggies a 52-0 final score in the end.
Â
In their second match of the day, Cal I defeated UCSB with yet another 52-0 final score. This time,
Luke Freeman gave the squad the early advantage, scoring a try just 10 seconds into the match off of a beautiful catch on the kickoff, which he carried directly into the tryzone.
Â
Cal I put another 50 points on the board in its final game of the day, once again not allowing any points to be scored against them by fellow PAC school Utah.
Â
Cal II also swept its pool in competition, putting up a 40-5 final score in its first win of the day versus Sac State. In the same form as Cal I, the squad took an early lead thanks to a try in the 20th second by
Cormac Saint.
Â
Cal II won its second match of the day by the team's largest margin of victory, logging another 52-0 final score for the program – its third of the day – against UC Davis.
Oliver Newall kicked off the scoring with a try in the 35th second. Just over a minute later,
Pat Deely broke into the tryzone for his first of three consecutive tries in the match.
Â
The third match for Cal II was the hardest fought battle of the day for the Bears as they conceded two tries early on to the University of San Diego.
Solomon Williams touched down in the last minute of the first half to get points on the board for the Bears at the intermission. They then came back with three tries in the second half to win 26-14.
Â
Kealan O'Connell had an impressive day statistically, with a pair of tries in each of the three matches for Cal I and five successful conversions, for a total of 40 points contributed overall. Saint went 8-for-9 on conversions in Cal II's trio of games, in addition to contributing a try against the Aggies.
Â
"We were solid throughout the day, maybe pretty good at times," Cal head coach Jack Clark said. "Only occasionally did we let ourselves down. We improved in some of the areas we targeted from the first competition and we need to stay on those lessons. Tomorrow is the knockout rounds of the competition, and as such we need to be at our best."
Â
The Bears are back in action tomorrow at the WCC7s on Treasure Island for two quarterfinals matches. Cal I takes the pitch at 10:20 a.m. against SDSU and Cal II will follow immediately after at 10:40 against UCLA.
