STANFORD, Calif. – California rugby went unbeaten on day one of the PAC Rugby 7s tournament, sweeping its pool to advance to the Cup Semifinals round tomorrow. Cal was the only team to win all three of its matches on day one from both pools.
 
The Bears opened the weekend of action with a dominant win over Stanford. Cal tallied ten tries, four of which were scored by Caleb Tomasin, and Solomon Williams and Alex Brundage combined to successfully convert four. The Golden Bears didn't allow the Cardinal to cross the goal-line once, handing them a 58-0 final score.
 
In the second match of the day, Cal faced Utah and once again prevented their opponent from ever touching down in the tryzone. The Bears scored seven tries on their way to a 39-0 final score, four of which were carried in by Joe Kirsten. Kirsten ran a ball in just 19 seconds into the match to give Cal an early advantage, his first of three scores in a row in the contest.
 
Cal's final matchup in pool play at the PAC Rugby 7s was with Oregon. The Bears scored four tries before the Ducks got one of their own, but Cal answered back with two more to lift the final score to 38-7. Kealan O'Connell converted four tries and added one try of his own to rack up a total of 13 points contributed in the contest.
 
In all three matches, the Bears controlled possession from the start, putting points on the board within the first minute of each match. The team scored a combined 23 tries by 10 different players. Kirsten and Tomasin tied for most-tries, each contributing five a-piece throughout the day. O'Connell logged six conversions to help Cal outscore its opponents 133-7.
 
The Bears will return to the pitch tomorrow for the knockout rounds of the PAC 7s. Cal will face UCLA in the Cup Semifinal at 10:55 a.m. PT. Fans can watch live on the Pac-12 Networks and the Pac-12 Now app.
