Cal Faces Off With Texas State
Golden Bears Play Host For Fourth Time In Five Games Monday Night
BERKELEY – California will go for its first win of the season as it welcomes Texas State into Haas Pavilion for a nonconference contest on Monday night. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Network with Roxy Bernstein and Ben Braun on the call.
Â
A difficult start to the campaign has the Golden Bears (0-4) winless through four games, most recently including a 74-66 defeat by Southern last Friday in Berkeley. They'll look to turn the tide against a Texas State squad that is 2-2 overall with one loss already to a Pac-12 foe in Washington State.

Monday's meeting is the first between the two programs.

NOTEWORTHY
- Cal is 17-6 in nonconference home games under head coach Mark Fox since 2019-20.
- Junior guard Devin Askew is third in the Pac-12 in scoring (17.5 PPG) and has led Cal in each game. He's one of three conference players averaging at least 17 points, three assists and three rebounds so far this season.
- The Bears lead the Pac-12 in free throw percentage (76.5 percent). They've made 40-of-47 attempts (85.1 percent) in the past two games, while senior forward Kuany Kuany is the conference's individual leader at 94.4 percent (17-18).
- Cal is averaging 5.5 blocks per game so far this season, having tallied at least four in each contest. The squad's improved athleticism and length has been highlighted by seven different Bears who have had at least one multi-block game this season.
- Kuany Kuany has scored in double figures three times in four games. He needs one more such effort to match his career total entering this season.
- Cal's backcourt has been plagued with early-season injuries, as guards DeJuan Clayton and Jarred Hyder have not yet played. The Bears continue to be without junior guard Jalen Celestine – the team's top returning scorer (7.5 PPG in 2021-22) – who is working his way back to full speed following an offseason knee procedure. A timetable for Celestine's return has not yet been determined.
- Cal has outscored each of its past three opponents in the second half but has been unable to erase halftime deficits of 15, 10 and 12. The Bears have shot 48.1 percent (38-79) in the second half compared to a 34.4-percent clip (20-58) in the first half of the three games combined.
