Cal Adds Bloesch And Plough To Coaching Staff

Mike Bloesch To Become Offensive Line Coach/Run Game Coordinator; Tim Plough To Coach Tight Ends

BERKELEY – Travers Family Head Football Coach Justin Wilcox announced Monday that Mike Bloesch (offensive line coach/run game coordinator) and Tim Plough (tight ends coach) have agreed to join the Cal staff.

"We are excited to add a pair of excellent coaches and recruiters to our staff," Wilcox said. "Both have strong credentials and skill sets that are going to be tremendous assets to our program and help us win football games."

Bloesch will join the Golden Bears after finishing his third season at North Texas against Boise State in the Frisco Bowl on Saturday that will mark the Mean Green's third straight bowl appearance. Bloesch has served as the offensive coordinator each of the last two seasons after being a co-offensive coordinator in his first. He was also the quarterbacks coach in 2022 while working with the offensive linemen in 2020 and 2021. Bloesch spent the previous five campaigns at Tulsa (2015-19) including the final four as the offensive line coach after one working in quality control with the tight ends. He started in collegiate coaching in 2014 as an analyst at his alma mater Houston.

Bloesch's offenses have been known for protecting the quarterback with each of his last two squads ranking in the top 10 nationally in fewest sacks allowed, while his balanced offensive attacks were highlighted by a 2020 North Texas unit that averaged 513.2 yards of total offense per game (283.0 passing, 230.2 rushing) to rank eighth in the nation. In 2016 at Tulsa, his offensive line paved the way for a team that finished 10-3 and ranked among the nation's top 10 in total offense (527.0, No. 4), scoring offense (42.5, No. 7) and rushing offense (261.7, No. 8).

"Mike's offensive lines have been among the best in the country," Wilcox said. "He is a great teacher and developer of offensive linemen, as well as a tremendous recruiter, and that is exactly what we need. Mike will make our football program better, and we are excited that he is joining our staff."

"I am confident that what I bring to the table will help Cal football," Bloesch said. "There are already some great playmakers on our roster and we're going to do our job on the offensive line to make them even better. I'm also looking forward to recruiting additional talented players to join them."

Plough has coached previously at Boise State (2021-22), his alma mater UC Davis (2008-12, 2017-20) and Northern Arizona (2013-16) with his experience including 11 campaigns as an offensive coordinator.

During his second stint at UC Davis, Plough mentored two of the top players in school history in wide receiver Keelan Doss and quarterback Jake Maier with the duo picking up back-to-back Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2017 (Doss) and 2018 (Maier). Doss was also a finalist for the 2017 Walter Payton Award given annually to the best FCS player in the nation, while Maier led the 2018 Aggies to a Division I era record for victories with a 10-3 record, as well as a share of the Big Sky title and the school's first FCS playoff appearance.

"I am thrilled to add a coach with Tim's credentials and experience coordinating an offense to our staff," Wilcox said. "He is an innovative and versatile coach who has produced strong offenses and is well-respected in the coaching profession."

"It's exciting to join this staff and the football program at Cal," Plough said. "We have great potential to be a championship program, and I'm looking forward to doing everything I can to help us maximize our potential and take advantage of the opportunities in front of us. There are excellent players on our roster, and I can't wait to get to work with them and bring more talent in to join them."
