Cal Looks To Defeat Wolverines For Second Time This Season

The No. 4 Cal women's water polo team wraps up its Midwestern road trip Friday when it visits No. 7 Michigan for a top-10 nonconference showdown. The Bears and Wolverines have already met once this season, with Cal defeating Michigan 12-8 during the season-opening Cross Conference Challenge at Arizona State. This is the third and final game of a 10-day road trip for the Bears, who have also defeated No. 9 Arizona State and No. 15 Indiana during this stretch. Michigan will be the 12th top-10 opponent Cal has faced this season. The Bears have faced a nationally ranked foe in every game this year.
ROAD TRIPPIN'
The Bears are currently on a rare long-term road trip, having left Berkeley on March 17 and not returning until this Saturday. Cal visited Arizona State last Friday and notched a 15-7 victory before traveling to the Midwest to take on No. 15 Indiana, which they defeated 15-5. The Bears then bussed to Ann Arbor, where they will take on the No. 7 Wolverines on Friday. Cal was able to take the extended trip because this week is Spring Break at Cal.
THE WRIGHT SIDE OF HISTORY
Three-time All-American and 2020 Olympian Emma Wright has been on a tear lately, having registered 16 points in her past three games. That includes back-to-back six-point games (5 goals, 7 assists), which has moved her into eighth place in the MPSF in points per game (3.5). The co-captain of the Canadian Olympic Team leads the Bears with 33 goals, 23 assists and 56 points. Now with 187 goals in her career, Wright has moved into sole possession of sixth place on the program's all-time scoring list. She needs just three more goals to pass Alisa vonHartitzsch for fifth place on Cal's career list. Dora Antal is the program's all-time leading scorer with 243 career goals.
IZZY'S TIME
Junior Isabel Williams is having one of the best goalie seasons in Cal history. She leads the conference with 10.6 saves per game while ranking second in save percentage (.631) and goals-against average (6.73). Williams has been named MPSF Player of the Week twice this season and has registered nine double-digit save performances.
RUBY'S RETURN
After opting out of the 2021 season, sophomore Ruby Swadling has picked up where she left off after a promising freshman campaign. Swadling, a member of the 2020 MPSF All-Newcomer Team who also garnered 2020 All-MPSF honorable mention, ranks 10th in the MPSF with 1.3 assists per game. She also is third on the Bears with 25 goals and 14 steals. Included in Swadling's performance this season is a seven-point effort (2 goals, 5 assists) in a 17-7 win over then-No. 4 Arizona State during the Cross Conference Challenge on January 22.
IN WITH THE NEW (AND OLD)
Cal's coaching staff is a mix of veteran and new faces as four-time Olympian Heather Petri returns as a full-time assistant while Lance Morrison joins the Bears as well. Petri has spent time as both a full-time and volunteer assistant during head coach Coralie Simmons' six-year tenure at Cal, while Morrison comes to the Bears after a successful run as the head coach at prep powerhouse Miramonte High School. Petri was a two-time All-American as a student-athlete at Cal and went on to become the only four-time female Olympian in Cal history. She's also a four-time Olympic medalist, with a gold, two silvers and a bronze.
