Makena Smith Records Three Hits, Smashes 12th Homer Of Season

TEMPE, Ariz. – California got on the board first for the second straight day, but a big inning again led No. 14 Arizona State to the victory in a 13-5 five-inning victory in game two of the series at Farrington Stadium on Saturday night.

Makena Smith went 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI to lead the Bears (26-22-1, 6-11 Pac-12). Smith has five hits through the first two games of the series. Jazmyn Rollin hit a grand slam for the Sun Devils (34-7, 15-2 Pac-12).

HOW IT HAPPENED
For the second time in as many games, Cal got on the board first with two runs on two hits in the top of the third. After D'Asha Saiki got on with a seeing-eye single down the first base line, Smith followed with an RBI triple to right, her second hit in as many at-bats, as Cal took a 1-0 advantage. It was 2-0, Bears, when Anzaldo got the job done via an RBI groundout.

The Bears held the Devils to just one hit through three before the home team got it started in the fourth. ASU got on the board with a solo home run to right and registered 10 more runs on six hits to take an 11-2 lead to the fifth.

Cal wouldn't go away easily, as Makena Smith hit her 12^th home run of the season, a 3-run shot to left, plating Saiki and Kennedy Thomas who both singled to start the frame. ASU's bats stayed hot, however, scoring two runs on two hits to secure the run-rule win.

The Bears and Sun Devils wrap up the series on Sunday, May 1 with a 12 pm PT first pitch on the Pac-12 Networks.
