Jalen Celestine To Miss Start Of 2022-23 Season
Junior Guard Underwent Knee Surgery This Spring
BERKELEY – California men's basketball guard
Jalen Celestine underwent knee surgery this spring and will miss the start of the Golden Bears' 2022-23 season, which gets underway Nov. 7 against UC Davis. A timetable for Celestine's return has not yet been determined.
Â
"This is the second consecutive year that Jalen has had to endure an offseason surgery, but his approach to the recovery process has been terrific," Cal head coach
Mark Fox said. "We'll be excited once he's fully healthy and ready to return to the court."
Â
Celestine, a rising junior from Ajax, Ontario, has averaged 5.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game throughout his first two seasons with the Bears, appearing in 53 total contests with 22 starts. He emerged as a key contributor as a sophomore last year, averaging 7.5 points (8.4 PPG in Pac-12 play) and 3.1 rebounds in 25 minutes per game. Seven of his eight double-figure scoring efforts in the 2021-22 campaign came against Pac-12 teams, including a career-high 20 points off the bench against Washington State on Feb. 5.
