The Bears Strike First, But Fall To Bruins
The Bears went ahead in the 21st minute on a beautiful play as the Bears switched the ball to the right side. Skylar Briggs played the ball to Ayo Oke up the right flank, Oke turned and sent the ball to Noelle Bond-Flasza who made a streaking run out of midfield. Bond-Flasza drew the defense and tapped the ball to Karlie Lema who smashed the ball into the top of the net to give the Bears the lead.
UCLA answered just three minutes later on a goal by Maricarmen Reyes. The goal snapped Cal's shutout streak which lasted more than four games, falling just short of 400 straight shutout minutes at 398:17.
Reyes added a second goal in the 32nd minute after the Bears cleared away a ball from a free kick, but Reyes picked it up and fired a seeing-eye shot that somehow found the back of the net. UCLA added a third in the 58th minute as Ally Cook scored to the score to 3-1.
The Bears fought back in the game and found a goal in the 61st minute as Keely Roy converted a penalty kick to make the score 3-2. The Bears earned a PK after a nice interchange as Ari Manrique received the ball in the center of the field, turned and found a streaking Oke coming in off the right side. Oke received the ball took a dribble and before she could fire the shot, was taken down in the box, drawing a yellow card on Quincy McMahon.
The Bruins drew a penalty in 66th minute looking to add to their total, but Angelina Anderson came up huge. Anderson dove to her left and made a spectacular save to keep the ball out. However, UCLA added a fourth at Bridgette Marin-Valencia scored in the 83rd minute after a scramble in the box.
Cal (5-2-3, 0-1-0) is the first team to score more than once against UCLA this year as the Bears created a number of opportunities throughout the game.
UCLA (9-0-0, 1-0-0) had the first opportunity as the Bruins got behind the Cal defense in the fourth minute, but Anderson made a double save to stop the Bruin attack as she made a diving stop, got up and prevented the rebound. Anderson made six saves for the Bears.
In the 11th minute, Mia Fontana took the ball on the left flank dribbled towards the middle and fired a right-footed shot that just went past the near post. Five minutes later, Fontana again went on a long dribbling run, playing the ball to Oke on the right flank. Oke just missed Fontana on the return ball as Fontana was streaking through the Bruin defense and would've had a tap-in in front of the net.
Jadyn Shinn fired a shot from just outside the box in the 35th minute that forced UCLA's keeper, Lauren Brzykcy, into a save.
In the second half, Fontana had an opportunity as she got the ball on her left foot, but her curling attempt went wide. In the 77th minute, Hannah Cooper got on the end of a Roy corner, but the header went just over the bar.
The Bears will return to action on Thursday as they take on Arizona State at 7 p.m. from Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe. The game will be streamed on ASU's live stream channel.
