Bears Win Dennis Storer Classic
Cal Blanks UCLA 45-0 To Take 17th Consecutive Tournament Title
LOS ANGELES – Cal rugby won its 17th consecutive Dennis Storer Classic tournament title following a 45-0 victory over UCLA on Sunday afternoon. The Bears shutout all three of their opponents, outscoring them 165-0 this weekend.
Â
"Pretty solid start, I thought we played together quite well for the first time out," Cal head coach Jack Clark said. "Lots to work on, but a solid start."
Â
The Bears and the Bruins battled in the first half but Cal put points on the board early.
Nate Salter logged a brace in the match, scoring the opening try in the first minute. The two teams fought hard in the next 13 minutes, trading possession opportunities and scrumming often. Salter found his way into the tryzone in minute 14 for his second score of the day, and
Alex Aguero pushed another try in to extend the Bears' lead at the half.
Max Schumacher went 2-for-3 on conversions, bringing the halftime score to 19-0.
Â
Cal hit its stride in the second half, scoring four more tries and maintaining the clean sheet.
Max Clark scored a try in the 23rd minute and
Joe Kirsten put another on the board three minutes later. Both scores were converted by Schumacher. The Bears controlled possession for the majority of the half and
Solomon Williams and
Griffin Rudy scored two more tries, one of which was converted by
Kealan O'Connell, to lift the Bears' to a 45-0 final score.
Â
Five student-athletes had a multi-score weekend, with
Luke Freeman,
Dom Paga,
Solomon Williams, Aguero and Salter all contributing two tries and
Evan Weigold posting three. O'Connell had a perfect record on conversions, going 5-for-5 between two matches. The entire travel squad saw time on the pitch, with 15 players making their debut for the Blue & Gold in 15-a-side play.
Â
The Bears now turn their focus to the home-opener at Witter Rugby Field next Saturday. Cal hosts Santa Clara for a contest at 1 pm. Tickets for the match can be purchased on CalBears.com.
