Cal To Host Annual School Haas Rock Game On Jan. 20
Event Features Educational Programming And Player Interactions
BERKELEY – The Cal women's basketball team is set to host its annual School Haas Rock game against the Colorado Buffaloes on Friday, January 20 at 11:30 a.m. PT. The event serves as an opportunity to entertain and educate local youth at the elementary and middle school level and bring them into a university setting leading up to the game. Geared towards classrooms, the event will include special pricing as all tickets will be priced at $3 and students will have the ability to bring their own lunch or pre-purchase a $7 lunch at the arena. Tickets are available for purchase at
www.calbears.com. Â
Â
"This is an event we look forward to every year," Cal head coach
Charmin Smith said. "It gives us a chance to connect with our local youth and get them out of the classroom for a day of fun educational programming and the chance to experience a game at Haas Pavilion and hopefully become a Bears fan!"
Â
Before the game, students will take part in a pre-game educational assembly that will feature a performance and a Q&A with the Bearettes, the first majorette-style dance team in the UC system. The style of dance, which combines the energy of the high-step marching style of Black college bands with West African, jazz, modern and hip-hop choreography, was originally developed in the 1960s at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Students from the KIPP Bridge Middle School in Oakland will also put on a cheerleading performance.
Â
In addition to the dance performances, kids will have a chance to learn more about the Cal women's basketball players through an interactive panel aimed at providing guidance to students around maximizing their potential, and advice on navigating their educational journeys along with a workbook that highlights the different cultures represented on the team.
Â
Gates for the event will open at 10:00 a.m.
