No. 7 Cal Tops No. 22 Stanford to Improve to 8-0

Bears Match Their Season High with a 197.525, Li Wins Second-Straight All-Around Title

BERKELEY – The No. 7 California women's gymnastics team improved to 8-0 Saturday afternoon defeating rival No. 22 Stanford 197.525-196.075. The Bears won all four events and had seven individuals win or tie for first place as they once again tied their ninth-highest team score in program history.

For the second-straight week, junior Andi Li took home the all-around title scoring a 9.825 or better on all four apparatus for a 39.525. Sophomore Maddie Williams took second with a 49.475 and sophomore Mya Lauzon placed third with a 39.425.

As they have become accustomed to this season, the Bears took on the events in Olympic order and took on the vault to start. The event began with Li, sophomore Ella Cesario, and senior Nevaeh DeSouza each notching a 9.825 before freshman eMjae Frazier posted a career-high 9.950 that would win the event. She now has a win in three different events in just three meets. Cal would end with a 49.225, but trailed the Cardinal who tallied a 49.400 on the uneven bars.

The second rotation saw the Bears post their highest score of the night with a 49.475 on bars. Three different Bears tallied scores of 9.900 or better including Li and Williams who tied for the event title with a 9.950. It's the second- straight week that the pair split gold on bars. DeSouza took third place with a 9.900 as her team took a 98.700-98.500 lead into the third rotation.

Another 9.950 came on beam, but this time it was Lauzon earning the nearly perfect score to win the event. DeSouza set a new season-high and tied for second place with a 9.900. A pair of 9.875 scores from Williams and Frazier gave Cal its 49.425 for the event and widened the overall lead at 148.125-146.900. That beam score ties the ninth-highest in Bear lore.

Only the floor exercise remained for the Bears who saw their first three competitors score a 9.850 or lower. With the meet on the line Li, Lauzon, and Frazier stepped up for their squad with three-straight scores of 9.925, which ties the third-highest score in program history. This earned all three of them a share of the floor title and gave Cal a 49.400 on the event that sealed the victory.

The Bears will remain at home next weekend as they host Arizona State on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. in Haas Pavilion. Cal topped Arizona at the Super 16 to kick off the season 197.475-195.775, but will now face the Sun Devils with a conference decision on the line.
