No. 11 Cal Upended By USD In ITA Kickoff

BERKELEY – Jessica Alsola won in straight sets on Saturday for the 11th-ranked Cal women's tennis team, but San Diego defeated the Golden Bears, 4-1, in the final of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Hellman Tennis Complex. With the victory, the Toreros advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in February in Seattle.

Cal now has a record of 2-1. USD is also 2-1.

Earlier at Hellman, No. 25 Georgia Tech blanked Princeton, 4-0, in the ITA Kickoff Weekend consolation match.

The Toreros captured the doubles point against the Bears, with Claudia De Las Heras and Jordyn McBride defeating Makenna Thiel and Hannah Viller Moeller, 6-3, to clinch.

In singles, Alsola, ranked 16th, tied the match for Cal when she beat De Las Heras, 6-3, 6-1, on court two. But USD won three straight and eventually secured its trip to Seattle when the 29th-ranked Solymar Colling beat Cal senior Haley Giavara, 6-4, 7-6(5), on court one.

"Unfortunately, we didn't get the job done today, so we'll assess and figure out what we have to work on," Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. "There are a few adjustments we have to make, and then we'll get ready for next weekend, when we've got matches against two top-25 opponents."

The Bears host No. 18 UCLA on Feb. 4 and No. 9 Pepperdine on Feb. 5 at Hellman.
