Bears Play At ITA NW Super Regionals
BERKELEY – The California men's tennis team will send six Golden Bears to the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships starting Friday and running through Monday at Stanford. The Bears playing at the Taube Family Tennis Center are

The student-athletes competing at super regionals are vying for singles and doubles title as well as the right to advance to the ITA National Fall Championships, slated for Nov. 1-5 in San Diego. The two singles finalists and the two doubles team finalists at super regionals qualify for fall nationals.

Super regionals include players from Cal, Stanford, UC Davis, Gonzaga, Oregon, Pacific, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, Santa Clara and Washington. For the entry list, click

Last Year At Super Regionals
Five Bears –
Ryder Jackson,
Carl Emil Overbeck,
Lucas Magnaudet,
Derrick Chen and
Alex Chang – competed at the 2022 ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships at Stanford, with Jackson reaching the singles final to qualify for the ITA National Fall Championships. Jackson fell to the Cardinal's Nishesh Basavareddy, 6-0, 6-3, in the super regional final at Stanford.

Overbeck reached the singles semifinals at super regionals, while the doubles duo of Overbeck and Jackson also got as far as the semis.

Scouting the Bears
- In the recent KPSF Open in San Francisco, freshman Tim Stepanov won three matches to reach the singles semifinals
- Collegiately, Stepanov, who hails from Lugano, Switzerland, brings a 5-4 singles record and a 5-2 doubles mark into super regionals
- Carl Emil Overbeck, a junior from Copenhagen, Denmark, won four total singles matches (in qualifying, the main draw and the back draw) at the ITA All-American Championships in Oklahoma
- Overbeck is 5-3 in singles and 3-2 in doubles
- Derrick Chen – a Cambridge, England, product who garnered All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention as a freshman – reached the singles round of 16 at this year's Battle in the Bay Classic
- Chen, a junior, has records of 7-2 in singles and 3-2 in doubles
- Lucas Magnaudet, a senior from Paris, France, has a 2-1 singles record
- Alex Chang, a Berkeley native who went 2-1 in singles at the ITA All-American Championships, has an overall singles mark of 3-3 and is 2-2 in doubles
- Freshman Jonathan Irwanto advanced to the singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals of the ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Cal
- Irwanto, from Miami Shores, Florida, is 9-3 in singles and 5-1 in doubles,
- Kris Kwinta (UCLA '08) is in his third season as the Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis
- Francis Sargeant (BYU '15) is in his third season as Cal's assistant coach
Next Time
Some Bears will play in the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge from Nov. 4-6 in Dallas, while some Bears compete in the Jack Kramer Invitational from Nov. 5-7 in Los Angeles.
