Baekers, Jolly Grab America East Offensive, Defensive Weekly Awards

BERKELEY – The California field hockey team swept the America East Conference's weekly awards Monday with Bente Baekers being named Player of the Week and goalkeeper Tina Jolly taking home her second Defensive Player of the Week award.
 
Baekers, a graduate transfer from Northwestern, led the Golden Bears to a 2-0 weekend with road wins over New Hampshire and Maine to secure the No. 4 seed in this week's America East Conference Tournament. Baekers finished with seven points on three goals and an assist and had 11 shots with seven on goal for a .636 shots-on-goal percentage across the two games.
 
In the 3-1 win over New Hampshire, Baekers scored two goals on four shots. Her first goal of the day broke a scoreless tie midway through the second quarter. It was also her 100th career goal, making her the 14th player in NCAA history to score 100 or more career goals. She put the game away scoring her second goal of the day in the 45th minute. The two-goal effort was her fifth multi-goal performance this season and third in the last five contests.
 
Baekers has 37 points on 16 goals with five assists for the year. Her 16 goals are third in the America East.
 
Jolly earns her second America East Defensive Player of the Week honor after going 2-0 with 14 saves and a 1.00 goals against average. The two road wins by Jolly and the Bears marked their first 2-0 road weekend in the America East play since Sep. 24-26, 2021. In the win over New Hampshire, Jolly finished the day with six saves on seven shots faced. After surrendering a goal midway through the second quarter she shut out the Wildcats in the second half, recording three saves after the intermission.
 
Jolly was spectacular against Maine on Sunday, tallying eight saves and once again shutting out the opponent in the second half; she recorded five saves after the break.
 
The first-year starter also earned the conference's Defensive Player of the Week honor on Sept. 6. For the year, she is 9-7 with 66 saves and a 1.89 goals-against average. Her 0.702 save percentage is second best in the America East.
 
Cal returns to action on Thursday when it takes on No. 5-seeded Vermont in the first round of the America East Tournament. The game is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. PT and will be played at the Wicked Blue Turf in Lowell, Massachusetts.
