Cal Hosts ITA NW Regional Championships
BERKELEY – For the second consecutive season, California is hosting the ITA Northwest Regional Championships at the Hellman Tennis Complex and the Channing Tennis Courts, with the tournament running from Friday through Sunday. The event is one of two sets of northwest regionals taking place this week, with Washington hosting a tournament in Seattle as well. Seven Bears – Alex Aney, Jonathan Irwanto, John Kim, Lucas Magnaudet, Ethan Schiffman, Tim Stepanov and Mikey Wright – will compete with players from the region for singles and doubles titles, with the doubles champs and singles finalists qualifying for the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships.
Admission is free at both Hellman and Channing, with matches starting at 9 a.m. PT each day.
The regional tournament at Cal includes players from UC Davis, Nevada, Pacific, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara and Stanford along with the Bears. One Bear who will not be playing at regionals is Carl Emil Overbeck, who is still playing in the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma (see below).

Overbeck At ITA All-American Championships
Cal junior
Carl Emil Overbeck will play in the consolation singles round of 16 on Friday at the ITA All-American Championships. The Copenhagen, Denmark, product had reached the main draw via qualifying singles, but a loss to Sam Landau of Indiana, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, sent the Bear to the back draw.
Overbeck, who began play in qualifying singles on Sunday in Tulsa, got to the
consolation round of 16 via a walkover and then a bye on Thursday.
Last Year At Regionals
Cal's Mikey Wright and John Kim captured the doubles title at the 2022 ITA Northwest Regional Championships in Berkeley, with the duo beating Nevada's Loris Zisswiller and Satchel Benn, 4-6, 7-5, 10-7, in the final at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Pacific's Ran Amar won the singles title, beating Ryan Torres of UC Davis, 6-2, 6-1, in the final.
Next Time
Bears who qualify will compete in the ITA Northwest Super Regional Championships later this month at Stanford, with those winning titles on The Farm advancing to the ITA National Fall Championships in November.
