Overbeck Wins Singles Title At Jack Kramer Invite

ROLLING HILLS ESTATES/DALLAS – Carl Emil Overbeck completed a strong first half of the season when the California men's tennis junior captured the singles title at the Jack Kramer Invitational. The Golden Bears also concluded play in the Ralston/Neufeld Coaches Challenge on Sunday in Dallas.

The top-seeded Overbeck – who won four matches at the Jack Kramer Club to claim the title – defeated USC's third-seeded Karl lee, 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-3, in the final. Overbeck won in straight sets in his first three matches and wound up dropping just one set in the tournament.

"Carlo has been practicing really well, is in good shape and good form," said Kris Kwinta, Cal's Peter Wright Director of Men's Tennis. "He got over some hiccups from the past, played really well against (Cal teammate) John Kim in the quarterfinals and had a really good match over Spencer Johnson, a good player from UCLA, in the semifinals. In the final against Karl Lee, he looked like a million dollars for the majority of it and was leading 6-4, 5-0. It was smooth sailing. He was mixing it up – coming in, being aggressive then mixing up some strategies.

"Everything was clicking, but nerves hit. He had three match points but didn't win them; then he lost the second set 6-7. Things were looking really grim. But kudos to Carlo for staying composed and regrouping. He played as well as he could in that situation. I was really proud of him for coming back from a very tough mental situation."

Cal finished an otherwise competitive campaign in Dallas with a challenging set of matches against Harvard on Sunday, with the Bears dropping all six of their matches at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.

"We picked up a lot of valuable wins, tough wins and three-set battles in Dallas," Kwinta said. "Today was a tough day though. You win some, you lose some. Guys want to win every match, but that's not going to happen every time. Some of the Bears performed really well and had some good wins. It's all positive. That's why we went there – to play five, six, seven matches and see how our bodies hold up. I'm pleased with what I heard."

Cal returns to the courts in January.
