USA Punches Ticket To Paris Olympics

SANTIAGO, Chile – A trio of Golden Bears claimed the men's water polo gold medal at the 2023 Pan American Games over the weekend, with Team USA defeating Brazil 17-7 in the championship match.

With its eighth straight first-place finish in the tournament, the American team punched its ticket to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Current California starting goalkeeper Adrian Weinberg – who was out of the Bears' lineup for the last two weeks due to the international competition – finished the tournament with 14 saves in five contests.

The Bears were also represented by alumni Johnny Hooper and Luca Cupido. Hooper was hot from the outset, scoring seven of his 11 goals in Team USA's first two wins over Mexico and Puerto Rico. Cupido meanwhile averaged a goal per game, finishing with six.

The Bear trio has been a mainstay in Team USA's lineup this year, now having completed four international tournaments since March. Each figures to be a top candidate to make the final roster for the Olympics, which begin on July 26, 2024.
