Bears Fall In Double OT At Butler

Aimaq, Cone, Kennedy Score 20-Plus In 97-90 Loss

INDIANAPOLIS – Three Golden Bears scored 20-plus points and the California men's basketball team overcame an 11-point second-half deficit, but ultimately fell 97-90 in double overtime against Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Saturday.

Jalen Cone connected on a game-tying 3-pointer with four seconds remaining in regulation and knocked down two more key buckets from beyond the arc in the first overtime period on the way to a 23-point effort. Fardaws Aimaq posted 24 points and 16 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season and Keonte Kennedy added 20 points.

Trailing 73-70 with seconds left in regulation, Cone missed on a 3-point attempt but made good on a second chance when Aimaq corralled the rebound and found him for the assist. The game-tying bucket was one of Cone's seven made 3's on the day, tying a career high for the third time this season.

Jahmyl Telfort and Pierre Brooks II combined for 18 points across the two overtimes and made consecutive 3-pointers in the second extra period to extend Butler's lead to eight, 95-87. Posh Alexander finished with a team-high 21 points for the Bulldogs (8-2).

Telfort scored six straight points to give Butler a four-point lead in the first overtime before Cone responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to push the Golden Bears (3-6) back in front. A layup by Telfort tied it 83-83, and Jaylon Tyson missed on a layup with three seconds on the clock to send the game to double overtime. Tyson finished with 16 points – all coming after halftime – a team-high seven assists and five rebounds.

It was the first time Cal has played into double overtime since its 75-68 win against Southern Utah on Nov. 18, 2021.

The combined 67 points scored by Aimaq, Cone and Kennedy also marked the first time since Feb. 5, 2011 against Arizona that Cal had three 20-point scorers in a single game.

Senior guard Devin Askew (foot) missed his sixth consecutive game due to injury.

Cal will take on Ole Miss at Frost Bank Center in San Antonio on Dec. 16 as part of the 2023 Hall of Fame Series. Tipoff is at 4:30 p.m. PST on SEC Network.
