No. 4 Bears Cruise To Two Wins

Cal Holds Both Opponents To Five Goals
DAVIS – The No. 4 Cal women's water polo team earned a pair of double-digit wins at the Aggie Invite on Saturday, defeating California Baptist 19-5 in the morning before downing No. 17 UC Davis 15-5 shortly after.
Each game saw two different Bears record a hat trick. Freshman Abbi Magee and redshirt freshman Janna Tauscher ended the day with five goals each to lead the team. Cal (9-2) has now won by double-figures while holding its opponent to five goals or fewer in three of its last four outings.
Game one against the Lancers (5-7) saw the Golden Bears score a season-high 19 goals – 11 coming from freshmen. Magee helped get things started with a penalty and a buzzer beater in the final minutes of the first, giving Cal a 4-1 lead after one. She later capped a 7-0 run with her third goal at the 2:46 mark of the second.
Fellow freshman Millie Quin added another two goals for the Bears in the second to help give them a 10-2 lead at halftime.
With the game well in hand, senior goalkeeper Isabel Williams was subbed out for the second half. After stopping a penalty for the third straight game in the first quarter, she had eight more saves in the second to bring her total to 12.
A similar scoreline in half two saw the Bears cruise to their largest win of the year. Junior Reagan Whitney scored on two power plays, giving her 10 goals over her last four. Magee and Quin both scored again in the fourth to give them season-highs of four and three, respectively. Tauscher, Whitney, Helena Batey and Lindsey Harris all finished with two goals.
Following a short break, the Bears' defense picked up where it left off and was fantastic again against the host Aggies (3-6). Tauscher and senior Shea Salvino both notched their second hat tricks of the season in the 15-5 win.
Tauscher had a big opening period as she netted Cal's first two goals. Davis tied it 2-2 in the final minute of the first, but junior attacker Ruby Swadling converted a 6-on-5 to make it 3-2 through one.
The Bears went on to dominate both the second and third quarters, both of which had five different Cal goalscorers. The Aggies were outscored 5-1 in second frame and 6-1 in the third. Salvino capped a 12-2 run with back-to-back goals heading into the fourth.
Braces from Dempsey and Swadling and a fourth quarter strike by Whitney brought all three players to 16 goals on the year, just one behind Turner's team-leading 17. Swadling filled up the rest of the stat sheet as well, ending with team-highs of five steals, three earned exclusions and a pair of blocks. Sophomore Rozanne Voorvelt led the Bears with three assists.
Cal will have a week off before heading to Irvine for the Barbara Kalbus Invitational Feb. 24-26, its final tournament ahead of conference play.
