BOULDER, Colo. – Cal (13-16, 4-14) hung tight with Colorado (22-7, 12-5) in the first half, down just six points at the break, but couldn't sustain its offense in the second half, falling to No. 21 Colorado 95-69 at the CU Events Center on Saturday afternoon to close out the regular season.
Jayda Curry led all scorers with 26 points, which included 11 trips to the free-throw line, for her third straight 20-point outing. She will finish the regular season leading all sophomores in scoring in the Pac-12 at 15.5 ppg. Kemery Martín added 12 points while
Karisma Ortiz matched her career-high with six assists.
"I thought Colorado was extremely physical," Cal head coach
Charmin Smith said. "We struggled with that at times. And, you know, it took its toll in terms of turnovers. I thought we had stretches where we played well and shot the ball well, but we couldn't sustain it as long as we needed to."
Colorado jumped out to an early 9-2 lead before Cal hit on 3 of 4 shots capped by a Michell Onyiah layup to get within three points. The Buffaloes responded and a layup by Aaronette Vonleh put them up by nine with under three minutes left. Martín, Curry and Onyiah hit consecutive jumpers to fuel a 7-0 run cutting the deficit to just two points before the quarter ended. The Bears shot 60% in the first half to remain within striking distance, but turned the ball over 13 times leading to 11 Colorado points. A layup by
Amaya Bonner right before the half ended left the Bears down just six points.
Curry scored on a fastbreak layup early in the third quarter to get the Bears within eight points, but that was as close as they would come. Cal shot 33% in the second half compared to Colorado's 60% and gave up 26 paint points while scoring just 16. The Bears had to play without
Evelien Lutje Schipholt, who was unavailable due to illness.
Curry extended her streak of consecutive regular-season games with a made 3-pointer to 51 games and was the only player in the Pac-12 to hit a three in every game this season. Her streak is the longest in Pac-12 history since the 1999-00 season.
Colorado was led by Vonleh's 26 points and Quay Miller's eight rebounds.
