Bears In Third After Rain, Lightning Delays
Chang, Liu Tied For Second Individually
SACRAMENTO – After rain and lightning delays forced multiple stoppages throughout day one of the Causeway Invitational at Del Paso Country Club on Monday, the California women's golf team finds itself in third place behind a pair of top-two, round-one finishes.
With all 11 Golden Bears on the roster in action for the first time, Cal's A and B lineups were led by senior
Tzu-Yi Chang and freshman
Adora Liu, respectively. Both Bears finished the opening round tied for second overall with a 1-under 71, which was a season-best score for each of them.
Cal A finished round one in third place at a collective 8-over (296), just four strokes behind first-place Washington. The B lineup is in sixth at 14-over (302).
"When there are delays, it's really important to warm up. I did a really good job of doing that three different times today," Chang said. "It's not easy to do that at all, but that's where my focus was and I feel like my mind was very patient today."
The field was originally scheduled to play 36 holes on Monday, but after the rain delay lasted more than two hours and was followed by lightning shortly after, the 13-team field was able to complete the first round just before the day's end. The Bears stayed positive and ready through the suspensions and difficult playing conditions.
Four other Bears are among the top 30 individually through 18 holes. Junior
Cristina Ochoa tied for 13th at 2-over 74 while junior
Mika Jin and senior
Jasmine Lew are one stroke behind Ochoa and tied for 22nd. Graduate student
Annika Borrelli carded a 4-over 76 and is tied for 30th.
"Tomorrow, the focus is sticking on what's been working really well and not thinking about the result so much because it changes so quickly," Chang said. "We don't know how the weather is going to be, so we need to just be in the present moment and focused."
The Bears are set for another 8 a.m. PT shotgun start on Tuesday, depending on weather and course conditions.
