My name is Adriana Ellard, and I'm a second-year Public Health major and a jumper on the Cal Women's Track & Field team.
As a female athlete, a woman in STEM, and a daughter who deeply values the contributions of the women in my life, Women's History Month continues to serve as a reminder for me to reflect upon and appreciate the accomplishments achieved, the obstacles overcome, and the legacies left of so many diverse groups of women.
As an athlete, I recognize the barriers that women have had to face in light of the gender discrimination associated with athletics, and I admire those who have fought for their place in the sports world. Despite these challenges, it is vital to recognize the incredible strides women have made thus far, shattering stereotypes and paving the way for future generations of women to come. I see Women's History Month as a time to celebrate these achievements and appreciate the work that has been done.
As a woman in STEM, I take this time to acknowledge the challenges women have faced, and continue to face, in a male-dominated field. From a shortage of female representation to a disproportionate share of opportunities, women in STEM continue to work resiliently, making significant contributions to science and technology. In light of this, I find Women's History Month a time to honor their commitment and dedication to ensure that it does not go unrecognized. As I pursue a career within the STEM field, I strive to be a testament to the progress made in showcasing women's aptitude within the field.
As a daughter, Women's History Month allows me to reflect on the vital role that women have played in my life. From my mom, who has remained a source of guidance and support for me, to my sister, who inspires me and continues to set a positive example for me in everything she does, I am blessed to be surrounded by strong, intelligent, and independent women who continue to inspire me each day.
I am grateful for Women's History Month as I honor women's excellence, and I am proud to be part of a community of women who support one another and who use their passions to incite change.
Adriana Ellard, who hails from San Antonio and majors in public health, is a sophomore jumper on the Cal women's track & field team.
