Bears Set Five Personal Bests In Season Finale

Cal Battles Alongside Nation’s Top Gymnasts At NCAA Championships

STATE COLLEGE, PENN. – California men's gymnastics concluded its 2023 campaign on Saturday night at a raucous Rec Hall, where the top six teams and additional individual qualifiers from yesterday evening's contest competed for podium spots. The Golden Bears fielded seven qualifiers for a second straight year, while Stanford won its fourth straight national championship with a team score of 422.458.

Cal's two all-around qualifiers – junior Noah Newfeld and freshman Tyler Shimizu – each reached new personal bests on Saturday despite having just competed in six events the day before. Newfeld's floor score of 14.166 was the best set by any Bear all weekend, while Shimizu once again surpassed his previous career highs on vault (13.766) and all-around (79.398), adding an additional PR of 13.400 on rings. Senior Noah Sano also posted a personal best of his own, a 14.000 on parallel bars.

Although Cal faced plenty of adversity throughout the season, the Bears still managed to find opportunities to make this year one to remember. In total, individuals set 32 personal bests and 15 new program top-10 marks across four events (pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars), including a school record from sophomore Jasper Smith-Gordon on vault, while the team as a whole compiled six new top 10s on three events (pommel horse, vault, parallel bars).

The Bears also collected a number of awards from both the College Gymnastics Association (CGA) and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF). Both Newfeld and Smith-Gordon were recognized by the CGA as Regular-Season All-Americans in the all-around and vault, respectively; Smith-Gordon also earned CGA Rookie of the Week and Specialist of the Week in addition to MPSF Specialist of the Week honors in March and was subsequently named Cal's Gatorade Student-Athlete of the Month. The MPSF also recognized Theodor Roald Gadderud as its Specialist of the Week twice and Sano once.
