LOS ANGELES – The No. 5 California women's water polo team had a pair of streaks snapped on Saturday in an 11-6 defeat at No. 3 UCLA.
The Golden Bears (17-7, 3-2 MPSF) entered their regular season road finale on a two-game win streak and having beaten the Bruins (19-4, 4-1) two straight times dating back to last season.
Junior
Maryn Dempsey led the Bears with a season high-tying three goals. It was her fourth hat trick of the year. Junior
Ruby Swadling added a pair of goals and senior
Cecily Turner scored once. Senior goalkeeper
Isabel Williams finished with seven saves and a steal.
After falling behind 2-0 in the opening minutes, the Bears got on the board with a goal from Dempsey at the 4:28 mark of the first. Cal scored three times in the second period, each time cutting the Bruin lead to one.
Swadling took an assist from sophomore
Jessie Rose early in the period to cut UCLA's lead to 3-2. Dempsey was assisted by
Maddie DeMattia and
Rozanne Voorvelt to send the Bears into halftime trailing 5-4.
The Bruins pushed their lead to three goals to open the second half. Swadling and Turner answered with two straight to make it a 7-6 game, but UCLA scored the final four goals of the game and held Cal without a goal in the final frame.
The Bears will play one more regular season game before the start of the MPSF Championships, hosting No. 2 Stanford next Saturday, April 22 on Senior Day at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
