Cal Wraps Up San Diego Crew Classic
2V8+, 3V8+ Earn Third-Place Finishes
SAN DIEGO – The No. 7 California Golden Bears women's rowing team concluded the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday morning with the 2V8+ and 3V8+ finishing in third place in their respective grand finals, the V4+ taking fourth and the V8+ finishing sixth in a loaded field.

"We had a good opening weekend to the spring season," Cal head coach
Al Acosta said. "The V4+, 3V8+, and 2V8+ had tight races and came through with solid finishes. The V8+ had a great first half of the race but scrambled in the second half. The main takeaway from this weekend is that It's exciting to see the depth of the team. We're looking forward to regrouping back at Briones and getting back to work on Tuesday."

It was an extremely strong field in the Jessop-Whittier Cup grand final as five of the seven crews competing are ranked in the top 20 of the Pocock CRCA Poll. Cal's V8+ got off to a strong start during the first few hundred meters, staying within the top three spots but was unable to maintain the pace over the 2,000-meter course and finished in sixth place, just a couple of seconds behind Washington with a time of 06:43.506.

The V4+ boat got off to a good start in the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup grand final, staying in the top two positions halfway through the race but unable to maintain pace and dropping to fourth place just a couple seconds behind Stanford and a mere couple-hundredths of a second behind Washington with a time of 7:34.029

Cal's 2V8+ got off to a fast start in the grand final of the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy race was able to nudge out a late surge from Washington to finish in third place by two seats in a time of 6:47.423.

Rounding out the day's races was the Carley Copley Cup grand final featuring Cal's 3V8+. The crew was able to keep within the first three spots from the start and was going back and forth for the lead with Stanford about halfway through. Texas was able to make a late surge and pass them both in the last few hundred meters with Cal ultimately finishing in third with a time of 6:58.473.
