STANFORD – Haley Giavara won in singles in her final Big Slam for the 27th-ranked California women's tennis team, but the Golden Bears lost to seventh-ranked Stanford on Friday at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
Â
The Bears end the regular season with an 11-8 overall record and a 7-3 Pac-12 Conference record. Stanford – the Pac-12 regular-season champion – is 18-2 (10-0)
Â
The Cardinal won the doubles point after clinching on court three, with Cal's
Erin Richardson and
Hannah Viller Moeller falling 7-6(3) to Connie Ma and Valencia Xu.
Â
Giavara, a senior, claimed the first win in singles, beating the 16th-ranked Ma, 6-4, 6-1, to tie the Big Slam at 1-1.
Â
But Stanford won the rest of the way in singles to take the 6-1 victory. Cal's 48th-ranked
Jessica Alsola lost for the first time since Jan. 6 when she fell to Stanford's 24th-ranked Alexandra Yepifanova, 7-6(3), 6-2. That snapped an 18-match winning streak for the sophomore Bear.
Cal next plays in the Pac-12 Championship, which starts on April 26 in Ojai, with the tournament bracket coming out after the last regular-season matches conclude on Saturday.
