Turner, Swadling Record Hat Tricks
SAN JOSE – On Saturday, for the fourth time this season, the No. 5 California women's water polo team held an opponent under five goals, defeating No. 20-T San Jose State on the road 9-4 for its second consecutive win.
It was the second time this season the Golden Bears (17-6, 3-1) defeated the Spartans (12-15, 0-3) while holding them to exactly four goals. They were led defensively by senior goalkeeper Isabel Williams' six saves and three steals.
On the offensive side of things, the duo of senior Cecily Turner and junior Ruby Swadling led the way once again with their sixth and fifth hat tricks of the year, respectively. Junior Maryn Dempsey scored once and had a team-high two assists. Junior Mara Loughlin and freshman Abbi Magee had one goal each to round out Cal's goalscorers.
Loughlin got things started with a goal on the Bear's first possession. After assisting on that goal, Swadling followed it up with a penalty several minutes later, making it 2-0.
The Spartans battled back to tie it 2-2 to end the first, but the second quarter belonged to the Bears.
Dempsey assisted Turner for her first score of the day on a 6-on-5 to put Cal back ahead at the 6:38 mark of the second. Turner added another on a penalty and Dempsey scored on a counterattack, capping a 3-0 run in less than two minutes. Magee later scored the final goal of the opening half to give the Bears a 6-3 advantage at the break.
Swadling shined in a low-scoring second half, scoring two of Cal's three goals. Turner turned in the other to seal her hat trick. SJSU was held to one goal over the final 16 minutes.
The Bears will play two more games before the MPSF Championships, starting with their final regular season road game at UCLA on April 15.
