Golden Bears Hosting Event For First Time Ever

CAL OPENS PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP AGAINST ARIZONA STATE
— Arizona State holds a 9-4 advantage in the all-time series after the teams first met in 2018, and has won each of the last eight games including both games in 2023 with a 13-9 victory in Berkeley on April 2 and a 15-6 win in Tempe on April 9.
— Wednesday's meeting will be the fourth consecutive time the teams have met in the Pac-12 Championship with the Bears a winner in Eugene in 2019 for their first-ever victory in the event, and the Sun Devils victorious at Stanford in 2021 and in Tempe in 2022.
— Other memorable games have included a 13-12 Arizona State overtime victory the first time the teams ever played each other (March 25, 2018), a 17-13 Cal win in Tempe one week later (April 1, 2018) that was the Bears' first Pac-12 victory ever and the first of four straight wins over the Sun Devils, and a wild 21-18 Arizona State win in Berkeley in March of 2022.
— The weather forecast in Berkeley for Wednesday at first draw is calling for cloudy skies, a temperature of 61 degrees, and winds out of the west and southwest at nine miles per hour.

— Cal is hosting the Pac-12 Championship this Wednesday-Saturday. The event was first held in Boulder in 2018 followed by Eugene (2019), Stanford (2021) and Tempe (2022). There was no Pac-12 Championship in 2020 due to COVID.

CAL'S HISTORY AT PAC-12 CHAMPIONSHIP
— Cal is playing in a Pac-12 Championship for the fourth time. The Golden Bears first played in the event in its inaugural edition in 2018 and are 1-4 all-time in the event. Their lone win was the 2019 quarterfinal victory against Arizona State, while their defeats have come to Oregon (2018 quarterfinals), USC (2019 semifinals) and Arizona State (2021 quarterfinals, 2022 quarterfinals).

— Cal started strong with two seniors – Lawliss and Morse – scoring early goals in the opening period to give the Bears a 2-0 lead just over two minutes into the contest and led 4-3 before Stanford scored seven consecutive goals while holding the Golden Bears scoreless for over 17 minutes.

— Wednesday's game against Arizona State is the fourth in a stretch of up to as many as six consecutive Cal contests in Berkeley that started with a win against Oregon on April 21.

Riley Drullinger saved Cal's dramatic 14-13 home victory over Oregon on April 21 when she turned back a free position shot by the Ducks' Katie Collins with four seconds remaining. Drullinger has established new career highs in saves twice in 2023, most recently with 19 against Stanford last Friday after recording 18 in the April 21 win against Oregon. She had recorded her previous career high of 14 four times.

Kennedy Goss became Cal's all-time draw controls leader April 15 at UC Davis and now has 197 in her career. Goss is three draw controls shy of the school's single-season record of 81 set by Eliza Christman in 2019 and needs two more to match her own career-high of 80 in 2022.
— Cal is 5-0 when scoring at least 13 goals.
— Cal's five wins in 2023 are its most since going 7-12 in 2019.

— Lawliss became the first Cal player to be named Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week when the league's first weekly honors of the 2023 campaign were announced on Feb. 14.

Jennifer Wong picked up her first win at Cal in the season opener and her Cal debut Feb. 10 at Lindenwood, got her second and first home victory March 9 against Howard, and her third and first Pac-12 win March 17 at Oregon.
— Cal is celebrating its 25th season of lacrosse in 2023, with the program first gaining intercollegiate status in 1999 as a member of the Western Women's Lacrosse League.
